[Question] Cats...

Postby Juice » Tue Nov 25, 2008 9:24 pm

My cat has recently developed a bad habbit that i'm sort of worried about.

At night he starts scratching and chewing on my power cords from my computer.

He does this to try and wake me up as he wants to go outside.

I don't really have a problem with him waking me up, the problem is his method to wake me up.

So if anyone knows how to make a cat drop a bad habbit or anything i could do to possibly prevent him doing this, i'm all ears.

Get a used power cord, snip it, wait till you have some cat-bbq.

Or you can always put a leash on him at night and keep the door open.  That is, if there aren't any known predators in the outdoors.

Iono...I suck with animals.

He scratches and eats your cables = instant attention, I take it you shoot him away or something?

Get some hard plastic covers for them to protect them and ignore him when he does it.

and get a crat flap so he can get out on his own?

Put treats near it and through it, see if you can lure him through it, once he does it once or twice he will be fine.

you know what they say about stuff like that, its the only way they'll learn
A: it'll get through the cable, get electrocuted and die, problem solved.
B: it'll get through the cable, get electrocuted and survive, and it'll probably be the last time it does that  ;D

but yeah, get some hard plastic wrap, one of those spiral thingies, set up a decoy cable to its just attacking a wire not plugged into anything, or try and hide your wires better so she can't get behind there I know my cat won't fit behind my computer and couldn't get the cable if she wanted to.

I just realized that this is dumb. Do not use a water sprayer near electric devices  :)

haha, thanks for the responses, he doesn't really attack the cords for the sake of attacking them, he does it to wake me up to let him outside and i just hope i can wake up in time to let him out ;D

Does anyone have any ideas or tips on how to get a cap to use the cat flap thingo =o?

Like Samarka said, train the cat with food until it's not scared anymore. Or, leave it outside before you go to bed, and if it wants to get back inside to the warmth and some food, it's gonna have to use the f-ing cat flap! Should learn pretty fast.

Problem is, by giving him what he wants when he chews the cables you're reinforcing that behavior. But then given what's going to happen if you don't give him what he wants... :o

So yes, hard plastic wrap for the live cables so he can't damage them and possibly start a fire or get electrocuted and some old cables he can chew on safely. Then grab him and push him out through the cat door every time he chews the old cables.

I have a friend who has a cat, and was once annoyed because it was in heat. He used a clinical thermometer.

hot sauce ,,, or pepper spray put some on a wash cloth and dabb it over the cords dont put enough to get shocked yourself just enough to give them a good coating once he lights his mouth on fire he wont go back sounds harsh but its better than waking up to crispy kitty
