Signed up for the MSF - any thoughts

Postby Jesus_Shuttlesworth » Mon Jun 04, 2012 3:38 am

Never ridden before (well once for like 100 yards) and wanted to know if the MSF is worth the money. I know it can't hurt but just was curious as to how much I can take from the course. I pick up stuff really quickly and am actually excited to do some more learning and actual riding, but as far as the course goes is it worthwhile?

Personally, I had never ridden before I took the MSF course and I found it extremely helpful. Its a safe place to practice basic but necessary skills in a place where you can receive constructive feed back.

If you're someone who had been riding a little bit before, then there will be a lot you will already know, as the class is geared towards total beginners. But its something I recommend to all new riders.

The $200 or so dollars it costs to attend a beginning riders safety course is gonna save you thousands of dollars in beginner mistakes they otherwise might wreck you and or the bike. It is absolutely essential. I had prior riding experience before i took the class, and i still learned so much more. I had so many bad habits that they not only made me aware of but broke. Before when i just let my friend walk me threw the basics of riding, i laid down his beater bike like at least ten times in slow speed turns and just braking errors. A year later i take the msf course and pass with nearly a perfect final score. After 3 seasons of serious riding (5k+ miles per season) threw thunderstorms and all kinds of different traffic situations i have not even had to much as a single close call. That is a direct result of what i learned at the msf class and my online studying of riders and techniques.

I had been riding for years before I took the MSF course and I still found it helpful... The first half of the day was kinda boring because we learned everything about the bike, then walked it around, then scooted on it, then started easing into having it carry us 100 yards, then giving it gas. If I didn't know what I was doing on a bike, it would have been super helpful.

Is it going to be the difference between you falling or keeping upright on your motorcycle? Maybe, I never had an issue before that course though.
