Modular (Flip-up) Helmets

Postby abszero7 » Fri Apr 13, 2012 3:00 pm

I am not a rider yet, I am taking the MSF course in 3 weeks or so and I am looking for decent full helmets to buy that aren't going to be around....500 USD.

I have been looking up modular helmets that they look interesting. Does anyone have any experience with these types of helmets or any comments regarding the feel, aesthetic, and safety?

The bike I expect to get is the Ninja 250r; Not sure if this is relevant

I have an EXO 900 by scorpion, my wife likes hers, mine hurts my temple area after 20 minutes. My advice to you, is pick the helmet you like and wear it in the store for 30 minutes. Also, make Shute its not to heavy. A nice looking helmet is also the Bell revolver. I think the black one with the white stripes would look good for a street bike.

I'm sure modular helmets are pretty safe, but I just can't bring myself to trust them. I just can't get over thinking the helmet is going to flip up on my in a crash. Regular full-face only for me. And there are plenty of good helmets for cheap, you don't have to get a shoei or Arai or something like that.

I have an HJC IS-MAX BT modular helmet and I recently put a large dent in the bumper of an Acura RSX with the face of mine. Not too fast, decelerating from about 60 km/h.
My face is as beautiful as ever and I've bought another of the same kind of helmet to replace the now used one.

My first helmet was a modular HJC, I replaced it with a regular full faced helmet a year later due to the helmet being larger, heavier, and louder than a standard full face. I think the modular design is really only useful if you ride with groups and wear glasses, you won't have to take off your gloves, take off your glasses, take off helmet and reverse each time. Something else to consider is the safety of the latching mechanism.

yeah i think the general consensus on modular helmets is that they are quite a bit noisier.

there may be exceptions though. schuberth make a really quiet one (but it's expensive).

with regards to safety, i don't think they can ever truly be as wholly-rigid as a proper full-face helmet, but they ALL have to pass the safety standards before being put on sale and there are plenty of people willing to give their stories of a modular helmet doing it's job admirably (a few from this site, i might add).

so it probably comes down to a comfort choice. can you deal with the noise? does the helmet fit your head-shape?

it's unwise to decide on a helmet before you've tried it on. different brands make different shaped helmets and you might never be comfortable in certain brands, no matter how plush or expensive they are. that's just the way it is.

as the other guys round here have said, go try some on. it's fun! run around the shop making vroom vroom noises =D

i have a module helmet (flip up) & a full face helmet both from viper helmets. , but have no problems with it module or the full face helmets. only noise i really get is the wind from the open vents, like to keep me hair cool :D
