School Setup.

Postby Edd » Wed Mar 14, 2012 2:26 am

Hi, I'll be going to College in quite some months. I plan on buying a bike by then, however, my main problem is on where am I going to keep my gear. I'm planning on wearing Helmet, jacket W/ Back protector insert, Boots, and motorcycle jeans. I think I can handle wearing the boots, the pants off the bike and carrying my helmet. The college I'm going its still undecided so I don't know if there will be lockers.

My problem is Where should I put my jacket with the insert? I don't know if I can handle taking the jacket everywhere in my hand. I could handle taking it inside a backpack when I'm Not riding. but I have no idea if it would fit in a backpack.

I'm sure 90% of riders face similar problems. I would like to know you guys opinion on how you handle this types of problems.

Please don't put "Leave it at your teacher's class".

Thanks.

Hey Edd, I was in the exact same situation when I started University this year ( We start at the start of the year in Australia having summer during Dec- Feb and all), Regardless I ride my bike everyday of the week to Uni. What I would suggest is to find some very casual looking gear. I have boots, kevlar jeans, Leather jacket, gloves and a helmet. As soon as I park my bike I attach my helmet to the hook under the passenger seat and lock my bike.
People at a University will not mess with your bike in a car park, especially if it is parked with other bikes, they are intelligent people and will have better things to do, plus with people going past 24/7 they will be instantly caught.
I chuck my gloves into my backpack and then all that separates me from all the other students is my leather jacket which is stylish and I just throw over the back of my chair when i'm in class.
So the only gear I have on is boots with normal looking jeans over the top.

Also if it is too hot to wear a jacket you will be carrying it, which is never far as you will only ever be walking to somewhere where you will be sitting down again. Plus the jacket is a great conversation starter. I walked into my first lecture with my helmet and the cute girl sitting next to me saw and asked 'oh sweet do you ride a motorbike'? To which I replied, 'No, i'm just a really bad driver'. Gets a laugh every time and they are sure to remember you.

Eventually if you get sick of that the reception lady in the building of your faculty will often look after your gear while your there for the day.

Ahh Thanks bro. I've never thought of when having a bike you should park it next to other bikes, It would kind of intimidate other people from messing around with your gear. Alright.. It seems you solved my problem but there is one thing.

Before that, let me tell you that My biggest fear of using a motorcycle is ending up on a wheelchair or worst, busting my neck. But I like motorcycles so much that i'll take the risk So I'll Always put on a back protector...

Having that said, Do you have a back protector insert on your jacket??? If so, does it make the jacket weird???

Thanks man.

I think you'll find most good quality jackets have a small back protector inside of them, but I do occasionally use a back protector, but you don't have to worry about it making your back look weird if you have a backpack on. That said I think you'll find that if your not doing track riding you may not need a back protector.
Most on road incidents in motorcycles will be a low side where your back will make very little contact with the ground, and if you maintain distance from cars you will not have to worry about them causing damage.
Adding on to that the safest speed to travel is just faster than the flow of traffic, so you are the one who will be controlling what happens around you so you don't have to worry about cars coming from behind.

But yeah, related to your original question probably best to just search for a jacket with a good back pad/ protector in it.
