New gaming rig

Postby Mista Bob » Thu Aug 12, 2010 11:00 pm

Just put this together recently
Image

Nice to be back in the world of modern PC games, no more playing games from 5+ years ago only.  :P
Also got myself a new monitor.

Bit odd at first using such a big monitor but once you adjust it's pretty awesome.
It's a 27" BenQ

Specs are:
Antec 900 case
Phenom II X4 955 processor + aftermarket heatsink/fan can't remember name
ASUS mobo... never can remember the motherboard names
4 gigs of high speed Mushkin ram with ram coolers
640 gig 7200rpm WD hard drive
nVidia 9800 GT video card... decided to use this old one instead till I can afford the card I really want (GTX 480).

Runs games nice and smooth, love it so far.  :D

How much did all this cost? And did you order the parts online?

lol ha, that case is nice but its a total bitch to set up. I have the exact same case. I personally like Intel more than AMD, and im pretty sure Intel is better. My dad used to work for AMD and he told me to never get a cpu from amd cuz it overheats a lot easier in comparison to Intel. A gtx 480 costs a lot, unless you are a intense gamer, i think you should just get a gts 450 or the sexy ass 6870 (ati ftw - im bias xD).

agree ati ftw but not a 6 series there no way as good as the 5 series. And they cost more thats why im staying with my old 4890 that cost me less then some 5 seriese and gets me more fps in all the games i try lol

Got all the individual parts from a local shop. Was only slightly cheaper to get it online from newegg, then the shipping would have made it more expensive.
Was about 800 bucks for all of the PC.

Intels are faster right now but they are also a lot more expensive. It just isn't worth paying that much more for what ends up being a minimal performance increase in games.
And AMD's don't really have overheating problems at all. They run vastly cooler then Intel's stuff right now, at least half the temps on average.
Then turn on hyperthreading with the Intel's and they get even more hot.
Really though, if any processor over heats it's basically the users fault either for faulty installation or from massive amounts of dust that they haven't been cleaning out.

Personally, I'll never own an ATi card again myself. Had way too many problems with them. The card itself is fine, it's just their drivers are garbage.
And the issue gets even worse when you throw crossfire setups into the mix.

Hopefully it didn't take anything else down with it?

Get a Corsair, probably some of the most solid PSU's you can buy currently.

Best case ever man!

I love AMD - seems to overclocked much more and easier too! Overheating used to be a problem, dont find it much with them anymore. Loads of ArcticSilver, and a decent heatsink irradicates any worries.

As with Mista, bad experiences with poorly developed driver with ATi - never been let down by nVidia. Ill stick to them. Bigger name anyway!

Bleh, don't waste your money on ArcticSilver and never put 'loads' of compound on!

The cheap generic thermal compound works just as well as any other, the difference is negligible. Look up comparisons.
You need to put on a THIN layer. The idea is to fill the tiny gaps between the two surfaces and still allow the heatsink to absorb the heat. If you put on a thick layer, you push the heatsink further away from the CPU and you get compound being pushed out the sides. The heat is then not transferred to the heatsink properly and has to be partially absorbed (badly) by the compound.

As for PSUs, I've had my Asus PSU for ages and from what I've noticed Asus make good shit in general.

I wouldn't use ATI over NVidia either... and AMD for the win.
