I ran into a few mixed opinions after trying the game for the first time today. Overall, it's a damn fine experience, with a lot of much needed improvements over the original(which I still play from time to time).
Visually, they did an all around good job. I like that units change when you upgrade them, the animations are pretty nice, and overall the models are solid. I really dislike the color palette, though. It's way too "Warcraft" with the vibrant hues, and lacks the darker feel of the original Starcraft. Outside of my complaints about the colors, which are a personal gripe, it's a solid looking title.
Gameplay wise, they seem to be tweaking, and improving it as time goes. I was glad to see a patch filled with balancing changes. I will note that roaches are completely broken. Cool as they are, 120 of those buggers will massacre any base, even while taking heavy fire from siege tanks, or air units. They're just insane. Contrast to that, my favorite, the Hydralisk, seem to be absolute garbage. Their acid spit was removed, given instead, to the roaches, and their new spikes lack the punch, or miniature splash damage of their previous incarnation. I'm really saddened by their apparent nerf, but perhaps, due to the overpowered nature of the roaches, this is simply a contrast element.
Now, I only tried Zerg today, as they were my favorite before, so I plan on trying out the other two in the future, but it was all around great fun. The new units are nice, I love that some can now move while burrowed, and you gotta love the Zergling's new evolution. Nothing like a bunch of rolling bombs to send at your enemy, haha!
Overall, good impressions so far. It's a lot of fun, and manages to recreate that classic feel of the first Starcraft. I really wish the visuals had more of that oldschool sci-fi grit, and I look forward to some further balancing, but they did a good job on the game. Though, nothing excuses the $140 pricetag they're putting on the full package. Thankfully online isn't really affected by that, but I did enjoy the story of the first Starcraft. =/
