300 pound male on a Ninja 650R

Postby Arcine » Fri Apr 02, 2010 10:56 pm

I'm not the typical build of what people think of when they hear 300 pounds.  I have a ton of muscle and a pretty big beer belly, but will the 650R be able to haul my heavy self down the highway pretty easily?  And would it be a good investment power-wise?

Yeah man, no passenger unless they're a skinny chick (why else would there be anyone else?). The engine will have no problem, but i'd be careful with the suspension over hard bumps. You could probably get a suspension upgrade if you have the cash.

Max load on a 650r is about 370lbs so you should be fine as long as you crank up that preload. And the bike will do just fine on the highway... But depending on how physically big you are, that ninja is gonna look small.

In sport bike town, the ninja 650r isn't a small bike. I think utility is trying to say maybe you should look for a cruiser or other large style.

What Utility was trying to say is that if the man is 7ft tall (like another 300lb guy I know) that bike is gonna look small.

So if the bike is too small, what should he do?

Definitely go sit on one. I'm just about 6ft, and my knees fit perfectly into the indentations on the tank of one. I'd eventually upgrade the shock on it though. If you're lucky enough to find a lady who really likes to be on the back of it, you're gonna want a decent shock. It may not break, but a better shock will definitely help the handling with that much weight.

I'm 5'10" and 330 lbs.  I have a Suzuki SV650 and a BMW R1100RT and I find both bikes pretty comfortable.  I'm sure lots of people are laughing their asses off at me, but I'm riding and having a good time.  My SV650 needed new fork springs and fork oil plus a new rear shock to feel comfortable around corners, but it would have needed both of those even if I were 220 lbs.  At my weight, i just figure those expenses into the bike after purchase.  The upgrade cost me about $225 for the SV650, and I did the work myself.  Thankfully, the BMW came with a fully adjustable Oehlins suspension so it seems fine with just adjustments.

I think you'd be fine on a Ninja 650r, which is about the same size and power as the SV650.  Granted, it's not going to be as fast with you on it as it is with a 150lb rider.  I don't often find myself wanting for power on either bike (more often for skill, lol), but if you're a speed demon you might want to upgrade later.

Well of course he's gonna upgrade later. That's what you're supposed to do. Start on a bike smaller than you hope to end up on in 5 years. Where have you been? Ha ha.

Adding to what John F. said, an SV650 would probably be a better option. The reason is upgrades. The SV has almost a cult-like following, and both the front and rear suspension can be switched out for a GSXR's, which is way better.

Heartlesspinto was right about the engine having no problem. In terms of just straight line speed, you'll probably still be able to hit 120mph.

And if you don't like the naked bikes, the fully-faired version looks great.
