125cc First Buy

Postby Frankiti99 » Sat Jun 04, 2011 1:43 am

Hi, I am looking to get my first bike and living in the UK the max cc I can have for my first year is 125cc. But most of the bikes i've been looking at online just look like toy bikes and are really small.

Can anyone suggest a 125cc that is both good quality and big in size? im 6 ft  ::)

Thanks alot  ;D

Yamaha YZF R125- This is probably the best looking 125 cc out there! (a bit on the expensive side though)
Honda xl 125 varadero- Quite big but not as sporty looking
But honestly I would say that height isn't too much of a problem try going to a local dealer and sitting on some bikes that you like you'll get more of a feel for it and see what's comfortable for you.

Going to a dealer seems like a good idea
It would also have to be pretty cheap as a student from september and would most probably buy it 2nd hand.

If you're looking for something super cheap then I would suggest the Yamaha YBR 125 or a Honda CG125 if you're willing to pay a little bit extra then go for the XL125 there are some 2 strokes and off road style bikes too that are meant to be pretty big, but I don't know much about them and from what I have heard 2 strokes are pretty hard/expensive to maintain so you'll be better off with a 4 stroke

How come the max cc you can have for a year is 125? It's only the CBT that restricts you to 125, once you get your full license you can ride anything up to 33bhp, or anything at all if your over 21 and do the DAS.

In terms of which 125, go to a dealer and find the one that you are most comfortable on. When it comes to a 125, and it's your first bike I would say forget looks, forget speed. All you should worry about is comfort, weight and budget.

Forget the looks because to be honest unless your going to spend silly money it's never gonna look quite as nice as it's bigger brother (like the R125 next to the R6).... That and it's more than likely that your gonna drop it.... more than once, and if your not worried about the looks then as long as it still works then it won't be a problem.

Forget speed because.... well untill you have experience and bike control (which the CBT does not teach you), it's not gonna help you learn. And all 125s pretty much move as quick as each other apart from the 2-stroke power machines which are high maintenance, usually pricey and generally not great to learn on.

If you find them comfortable then I would really recomment the dual sport/offroad bikes. They are light, easy to throw about with a bit of confidence and skill. They are pretty much indistructable and are built to be dropped - the most you'll usually get is a bent £15 lever as opposed to a smashed £300 fairing. And they are FUN. You will always learn better when your having fun as opposed to when your nervous.

Sachs XTC and the HyosungGT125 are the biggest of the 125's. I have an XTC and more than easily fit on it at 6'2.

The Honda Varadero 125 is the biggest 125cc road bike I've ever seen. I always mistake them for 600cc machines untill I see the L-plate or get up close enough to see the engine.

I dont even go near Sachs'es anymore...I lost all respect for them after they moved production to China

125cc's that look like "big" bikes:
* Honda Shadow 125
* Yamaha Dragstar 125 (the biggest looking cruiser-125cc)
* Hyosung GT 125 R (biggest racing-125 ive seen and tried)
* Yamaha YZF125R
* Honda Varadero 125
* Cagiva Planet 125 (not really big, but looks like a big bike)
* Suzuki VL Intruder 125

Honda NSR 125R, brilliant bike. But that's my biased opinion.

The 2stroke RS125 is a great little bike. And very fast too. The NSR is fun too.

If you are looking for performance, the 2strokes are your only real option. The older cbr150 is quite nippy for a 4t, but not sure they were ever available in the UK - ugly though.
