Asian food/candy

Postby BryanB » Sun Jun 06, 2010 9:18 pm

My dad returned from a trip to China and he brought back some candy/food/edible things.  I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what they are :D
Tasted pretty good, like a tiny dry cake.

Looks like 饅頭 (manjyuu) the first one, not sure if same meaning in Chinese....

The first one is from Beijing, it read something like Beijing small cakes on front, contains pumpkin seeds (?) butter, sugar, flour, salt I think. The second is from Shanghai、not sure about ingredients....the third is another from Beijing, I believe this is type of rice cake with sweet paste inside. This looks like Japanese 'anko' (bean paste) but it say sesame in ingredients. Sorry, I cant read much more.

The very first one is a kind of puff pastry/crumbling pastry ... "cake" from Beijing. I guess it's more like shortbread. Usually baked, with a glaze on top.

The second one (opague, white wrapper) are crackers as that's what the 2 words on the bottom right, on the front says. Made of wheat flour, milk powder, salt, "food addtives". The rest I have no idea what they are.

The third one is some "sesame flavoured"... jobbie which, again, has a starchy layer that wraps around the stuffing. Looks to me the starchy bit should be a bit soft & sticky & slightly chewy. Another Beijinese thing.

If ever anyone is in that neck of woods, try Mongolian jerky. Tough as leather but tastes absolutely great.
