I'll have a part time job by the 8th this month. I'll start saving now through my first year of college. By the time Spring '11 rolls around, I should have more then enough to pay for a down payment, fees, and Insurance. In the unlikely case I dont, my Mom said she would help with the payments (Surprised the sh*t outta me..she wasn't very supportive when I told her I wanted a bike...but that was 2 years ago.)

Chances are I'll be getting a Ninja 650r (fuel injection for the winter. I do plan on riding unless ice and snow say otherwise). but there's a possibility that I'll get a 250r because its cheaper and seems to be a better bike to learn on (More forgiving anyway). I still have time...another year or so to decide.

How'd you guys pull of getting your bikes?

if i can find a job this summer i'll prolly start getting my licence/collecting gear, hopefully finding a used 250 for cheap to learn on. so maybe by the end of the summer i'll have some wheels to ride around on.

Well that's a refreshing change over alot of other new riders out there who want to buy new. Riders so eager to buy big, new  and expensive to go fast that they never properly learn how to ride a motorcycle, little knowing that 80%-90% of them will crash or drop their expensive bike in the first year. Cornering is where the fun lies on a motorcycle anyway... And light bikes such as a 250 is great for learning how to handle the twisties.

By the time you get a larger motorcycle you'll be much better prepared and alot faster than those so eager to run before they can walk...

yeah, i've done a lot of thinking about it. like buying an older one so it's a) cheaper to fix it when i drop it, and b) it'll prolly already be beat up some, so i won't cry about damaging my nice new shiny bike. and well, yeah i want a 250 just cause i don't want to find myself getting into trouble by grabbing too much throttle; i can relax a bit more knowing i'm not going to have it jump out from under me if i do accidentally grab a handful of throttle.

it's like common sense, i crawled before i walked before i ran. it's so easy babies understand it.

It's nice to hear a person with no experience actually know they have no experience. There's so many benefits to getting a 250r other than being beginner friendly too. It's like one of the cheapest motorcycles to have because of its small, gas saving engine, and extremely low insurance premiums. The only bad thing is it's not ideal on longer trips at highway speeds, which will be pretty common for me. So i'll probably try to look for a 500r if i can land a job next fall.

well i do have a little experience, my brother has had a bunch of dirtbikes, one of which i've ridden for a day (ended up over the handle bars once or twice, and a pseudo-highside; but that's another story). but nothing on the road, and i know enough that offroad experience doesn't really translate to the road much.

and that's true, being a 250, gas and insurance will be almost nothing, which is good for me. besides, when i get bored of it in a year or two, then maybe i'll sell it and get myself a nice 500.

I think a nice step from a 250 after a year or two would be a 650 rather than a 500.

yeah, depending on how much you get for the 250 (which would prolly be in better shape when i sell it than when i get it) and insurance and what not, being under 25 i don't get many breaks for insurance.

Oh yeah i know what you mean. I'm not even thinking about getting a car because of the insurance associated with it. Even the oldest crappiest cars are a shit ton for me being a teenager. That's alright. Expensive car insurance just means i have more time to be a nut job on a motorcycle.  ;)  Too bad winter sucks around here.

A less than new 650 wouldn't be that much for insurance if you just get liability. An sv650 is a very common bike and can be had for pretty cheap. Cheap bike means no need for full coverage!
