Cruisers are so heavy that even a 400cc is fine for a beginner, i like the Virago XV 250/400 for a starter.
Theyre sooo cheap, can be repaired by anyone / any shop , and having a shaft drive makes for less maintenance  :)

Got a friend who started on a Honda Shadow 750. Speedo says 100 mph, hes only been to 90.

He hasnt had any problems learning on it and he even had a rear tyre go flat on him and he kept it under control. Ive drove it around the block and the throttle is easy and the rpms are low. Doesnt even have a tach (WTF?)

That's common on cruisers from what I hear.

i has a rebel 250! =D
i love it haha.
if you're short like me, then they'd fit you very nicely lol.
and with speed, this is my first bike and i have no other bike to compare it to, but it is pretty powerful from wut i can tell.
and i've watched videos with rebels going on the highway.
but from wut ppl have told me, the wind factor kicks in cuz the rebel is only 300 something pounds.

i started out on a virago 535. great bike. couldn't have asked for a more forgiving machine to start on.

then i stepped up to a CB500..... whoooah crazy!

they are like apples and oranges though. completely different.

i have a 250 cruiser and its very easy to handle especially around corners !!!  my bike sits on 110 km easy on the higyway.  reckon it can probably do extra 10 km /hr.  but it wont be to long before i get a larger sized cruiser

I've posted around the forum here a few times, but I have a question. First off I'm 19, and I live in the Southeast US. Now I know that the consensus on this forum is to start small like a 250 and I agree. For a year or two now I've been eyeballing the little ninja. But recently I've seen some of the cruisers around campus and I'm starting to like the look. I actually really like the rebel 250. But is a 250 too small for a cruiser? If I were to get one this summer it would go through its share of highway driving and will a little cruiser like that handle it well (not be able to do it but handle it well) or would a cruiser a little more powerful be a good idea?

hi there i live in the UK and can only ride a 125 legally  i have a Honda cm 125 and it is quite quick it will only do 65mph flat out but it will sit there all day long and it sounds much more powerful than it actually is because it has a v-twin engine

I got an '82 Virago XV750.  Easy as pie to ride on, and once it was fixed up, it runs like a dream.
Bikes:  Yamaha Virago XV750J, BSA Lightning, Harley Electraglide, Honda Ascot Cafe, Suzuki GS550L, Yamaha RD350 (soon cafe'd)

Check out my blog with updates to all the bikes I am/will be working on!  http://www.psycleshack.wordpress.com

250 is fine for a cruiser (though i know im answering tons late)  I have a 250 virago, which runs much better and looks better than the rebel. Trust me, it's plenty of power for about anything you need, though I wouldn't run across the country on it. lol
